Campus Polling Place Provided by Politically-Minded Student    

Voting is an inherent American right, but finding time between tests and teaching can be challenging for everyone, not just students and staff of a university. Not to worry, Texas A&M University at Galveston now has an official polling place inside the Aggie Special Events Center (ASEC 3035) building that will serve Galveston County registered voters from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. tomorrow, March 3, 2020. 

Since chairing the political affairs committee as a member of the Student Government Association on campus, Maritime Transportation student Cody Seals ’21 has lobbied strongly to make Texas A&M-Galveston an official polling place. 

“I felt it was important because as students and residents of Galveston, it's extremely important to have our voices heard so that we are not left out of important decisions that could have an impact on us here on campus,” Seals said. “This polling location gives students a chance to get more involved in every upcoming election, so it’s my goal that the student body becomes excited and enthusiastic about this polling location.”

Seals hopes the on-campus location remains a polling place for years to come, as does Student Development Specialist II Taylor Kemp. Kemp supported Seals in his quest to attain Texas A&M-Galveston’s polling location designation. 

“Our students are an integral part of the political process. Since many of our students arrive on campus around the same age that they are allowed to begin voting, it’s important that we stress the importance of participating in all local, state, and federal elections because these elections play a direct role in their collegiate experience,” Kemp said. 

Seals worked with a few campus personnel who put him in touch with a county commissioner in order to obtain a Pelican Island polling location.

Parking will be available directly in front of ASEC, in the Faculty/Staff section of Lot M207. This polling place will be utilized for future local, state and federal elections, according to county officials.
